My family and I are heartbroken. I’ve known Greg and Lori for over 40 years—growing up together—and I’ve known Vince since he was born. Watching him grow into the man he became was a gift, and losing him leaves a huge space that can’t be filled.
Vince’s character and attributes were truly Christlike in the way he loved people—kind, empathetic, grateful, and full of grace. He made people feel seen. He never seemed to carry a grudge, and he always had something good to offer others, whether it was his time, his words, or the care he put into handwritten thank-yous and little gestures that meant a lot.
Vince was also quick witted with a great sense of humor that somehow was always right on and memorable.
A personal story of kindness was posted by my daughter Sam. Separately, in 2001, Greg and Vince visited Seattle to see the Cowboys play the Seahawks. Vince was 12 and my daughter Hunter was 8. The weather was some of the heaviest rain that lasted throughout the game. Raining buckets would be an understatement. Vince was more concerned about my daughter staying warm and dry than he was about the game itself, even offering to share his outer clothing if Hunter needed it. At the age of 12, Vince had already developed enduring qualities that shaped his life and personality.
Vince’s quick witted humor was always something I admired. A couple of years after Seattle, Vince and Greg came to Dallas for a Dallas Cowboys game. I picked him and Greg up at the airport. Vince was sitting in the backseat playing with all the new buttons in my car and I simply said, “watch this Vince” and started controlling things in the backseat. He quickly lamented, “ Oh Ray, this is just all an accident waiting to happen”.
One last quick witted moment was at Lake Powell. Greg and Uncle Curtis got trapped walking through a sticker patch on the shoreline. Vince seeing the predicament simply said “It’s Nacho Day”. To this day, “It’s Nacho Day” is used when things don’t go our way on the golf course.
Today, we cherish our memories of Vince and should all honor his legacy in how we in-turn show up for others, most importantly Nadia, Lorenzo and Edilea. Vince absolutely loved and adored them and may we honor him in how we show up for them in the months and years ahead
May God bless the Romero family!
